The best unscented cat litter should smell of nothing at all, and that’s harder to find than the label suggests. When I sniff-tested litters marked unscented or fragrance-free, several still smelled of perfume, and one was overpowering. This guide covers the labels that hold up.

Why Unscented Litter Is Worth It

Most cats would rather their litter smell of nothing. The Cornell Feline Health Center says most cats prefer unscented litter. The AAFP and ISFM, the main feline veterinary bodies, go further and note that cats often find scented litters and litter deodorizers offensive.

For people, perfume can cover a smell for a while, but it doesn’t stop the ammonia that causes it.

“Unscented” Labels That Failed the Sniff Test

This is the part most buying guides skip. I opened each bag and noted how it actually smelled, straight from the bag and once wet, including the ones sold as unscented or fragrance-free. Here’s what I found:

Only two of seven labels held up. A faint scent may not bother every cat, but it isn’t what “unscented” promises. The two worst offenders smelled strong enough to rule them out. Arm & Hammer’s Multi-Cat formula also did poorly in our other tests.

The takeaway is simple. Don’t trust the front of the bag alone. Choose a litter with a confirmed neutral smell, or one whose ingredient list gives it no reason to smell of anything, like plain clay, corn, wood or grass.

Boxiecat is the safest unscented choice because it passed the sniff test cleanly: no smell straight from the bag and none once wet. It also out-absorbed every litter in our liquid test.

I use Boxiecat’s unscented Premium at home, and neither of my cats hesitated to use it. The clumps form flat and firm on top, so they come out whole without sticking to the box. The downside for us is cost, since two cats go through it quickly, and it’s harder to find in stores than supermarket clay.

How to Switch to Unscented Litter

Cats notice changes, so switch gradually. The Cornell Feline Health Center advises mixing small amounts of the new litter into the old rather than swapping all at once. Increase the share of new litter over several changes until the old litter is gone.

Keep the rest of the setup the same while you switch. That means the same box, the same spot and the same depth, which my guide on how deep cat litter should be puts at about two inches. If your cat starts avoiding the box, slow down or step back to the old mix for a while.

We made this switch ourselves. My cats started on a scented Fresh Step, and I found the fragrance too strong, so we moved to Fresh Step’s unscented formula. Both cats kept using the box without any problems.
