Cost per day, month and year for seven popular litters, and why price per pound misleads.
How much does cat litter cost? For one cat, most popular litters run $9 to $13 a month, or about $110 to $160 a year. Premium and crystal litters cost two to three times as much. With an orange tabby and a Ragdoll sharing our boxes, litter is one of our biggest regular pet costs, so I pulled together real cost-per-day figures rather than bag prices.
Short answer
A typical clumping clay costs about $0.39 to $0.43 per day for one cat, which is $12 to $13 a month or $142 to $157 a year. The cheapest options, budget clay and pine pellets, run about $0.30 per day. Premium litters cost $0.80 to $0.97 per day. Multiply by the number of cats.
Cat Litter Cost by Brand
Bag prices are misleading, because bags come in different weights and litters get used up at different speeds. Cost per day is the figure that matters. I tracked how quickly each litter was used in real boxes, then worked out daily, monthly and yearly costs for one cat.

The spread between the cheapest and the most expensive is more than three times. Most of the mainstream clays sit in a narrow band of about $0.35 to $0.43 per day. PrettyLitter’s figure comes from the same site’s separate test; I multiplied its daily cost to get the monthly and yearly figures.

Cost by Litter Type
The type of litter matters more than the brand. I averaged the monthly cost for one cat across all the litters I tested in each category. Clumping clay comes out cheapest on average, and silica crystal the most expensive.

Averages hide the range inside each type. Feline Pine is among the cheapest litters overall, yet the pine category average is higher because premium wood litters pull it up. How Much Litter Does One Cat Use?
In our testing, a 40 lb bag lasted one cat between four and seven weeks. That works out to roughly 25 to 45 lb of clay a month. The spread depends mostly on clump strength: a litter that holds together means you only remove what’s dirty.
Box size and litter depth also change how much you use. A bigger box or a deeper layer takes more litter to fill, and you throw more away at each full change. About two inches is enough for most cats, as I explain in how deep cat litter should be.
What Two or Three Cats Cost
Litter use scales almost exactly with the number of cats, because each cat adds its own waste. The ASPCA also recommends one box per cat plus one extra, so a two-cat home has three boxes to fill. Here’s the monthly cost for three common choices.

I haven’t tracked my exact monthly spend, but our usage shows where the money goes. With two cats, we change Breeze pads every five days and pellets about every 15 days, and I buy litter in large bags or several at once.
Why Is Cat Litter So Expensive?
Three things push the price up. Clay is heavy, and shipping and handling 40 lb bags isn’t cheap. Premium litters use costlier materials such as tofu, silica gel or processed plant fibers. And many litters add fragrance, odor-control ingredients or special features.
The biggest hidden cost is waste. Put plainly, a litter that breaks apart when you scoop forces more frequent full box changes. A cheap clay with soft clumps can end up costing about the same as a pricier one that clumps firmly, because more clean litter goes in the trash each day.
Price per Pound vs Cost per Day
Price per pound is the number on the shelf tag, but it can mislead. In our data, prices ranged from $0.33 per pound for Frisco to $4.00 per pound for PrettyLitter. That’s twelve times the price per pound, yet PrettyLitter’s daily cost is under three times as much.
The reason is weight. Silica crystals and pine pellets are much lighter than clay and are used differently, so a pound goes further. Always compare cost per day or per month. If a site or retailer only shows price per pound, check how long the bag lasts before deciding it’s a bargain.
How to Spend Less on Cat Litter
You don’t need to switch to the cheapest bag to cut your litter bill. These habits make any litter last longer:
- Scoop at least once a day, so clumps stay intact and smells don’t force early changes.
- Keep litter about two inches deep rather than filling the box to the brim.
- Choose a litter with firm clumps; less clean litter goes out with each scoop.
- Buy larger bags or multipacks, which usually cost less per pound.
- Top up after scooping instead of doing frequent full changes.
