Best Lightweight Cat Litter: Easier to Carry, Still Clumps

Lighter bags without giving up clumping, and why light litter always costs more per pound.

· 9 min read

The best lightweight cat litter saves your back without making the box a mess. A standard 40 lb bag of clay is hard work to carry up stairs, and lightweight litters promise the same box at half the weight or less. I compared six lightweight options on our own test data, and on what you give up for the lighter bag.

Here are the picks. Each name jumps to its full write-up, including who should skip it.

  1. Tidy Cats LightWeight Free & Clean: best lightweight clay
  2. World’s Best Cat Litter: best natural clumping option
  3. Catalyst Soft Wood: light wood litter that clumps
  4. Tuft + Paw Really Great: lowest-dust clumping pick
  5. Ökocat Paper Pellet: zero measured dust
  6. PrettyLitter: lightest bag of all

If you like how clay works and just want lighter bags, start with Tidy Cats LightWeight Free & Clean. The brand says it’s about half the weight of standard clumping clay, and it scoops the same way. If you’d rather leave clay behind, World’s Best is the easiest natural switch.

Runner-up World's Best Cat Litter — a natural corn litter that clumps well and is sold almost everywhere.

How Lightweight Litter Works

There are two kinds of lightweight litter. Lightweight clay is made to be less dense than standard clay while keeping the familiar clumping feel. Natural light litters use materials that are less dense to begin with: corn, wood, soy, recycled paper or silica crystals.

Think of it as buying air in the grain. Light litters fill a box to the same depth as clay at a fraction of the mass. That’s why a light bag can fill a box as far as a much heavier bag of clay, and why comparing bags by weight alone is misleading.

Lightweight Cat Litters Compared Side by Side

The table lists the six picks with our test data. Tidy Cats’ figures are for its regular formula; I haven’t measured the LightWeight version separately yet.

Litter Type Clumps? Dust per pour Cost per day Bag size
Tidy Cats LightWeight Lightweight clay Yes 0.50 mg (regular formula) $0.39 (regular formula) 17 lb
World’s Best Corn Yes, 76% held 0.15 mg $0.58 Varies
Catalyst Soft Wood Soft wood Yes, 73% held 0.15 mg $0.72 18 lb
Tuft + Paw Really Great Tofu Yes, 78% held 0.05 mg $0.97 9 lb
Ökocat Paper Pellet Recycled paper No 0.00 mg $0.52 20 lb
PrettyLitter Silica crystals No Not measured $0.80 6 lb

Every natural light litter here costs more per day than clay, from $0.52 to $0.97 against $0.39 to $0.43 for good clays. That’s the price of a lighter bag. My guide on how much cat litter costs puts those numbers in monthly and yearly terms.

  • ScentUnscented
  • WeightAbout 50% lighter, per brand
  • Bag17 lb

Best forClay users who want lighter bags without changing how they scoop.

Skip it ifYou want the least dust; premium clay measured far lower.

What stands out

  • Scoops like regular clumping clay
  • About half the weight of standard clay, per the brand
  • Unscented, with activated charcoal

Watch out for

  • LightWeight formula not measured separately yet
  • Regular Tidy Cats had softer clumps than rivals
  • Regular formula measured 0.50 mg of dust per pour

This is the simplest switch: same clay routine, lighter bag. Purina says the LightWeight formula is about 50% lighter than standard clumping litter and 99.9% dust-free. In our tests, regular Tidy Cats measured 0.50 mg of dust and 62% clump strength. My Fresh Step vs Tidy Cats comparison covers the brand in detail.

My cats have used several lighter litters from this list: World’s Best, Catalyst, Tuft & Paw and Ökocat paper pellets. Both cats accepted all of them. Compared with the clay we use now, the trade-offs were soft clumps with World’s Best and Catalyst, no clumping with Ökocat, and a higher running cost with Tuft & Paw.

  • Pellets track less than fine granules

Watch out for

  • About $0.97 per day, the most here

  • Small 9 lb bags run out faster

Tofu litter is made from soybean fiber and comes in light pellets. Tuft + Paw measured the lowest dust of any clumping light litter tested and held 78% of clumps. It also tracked very little in our tests. It’s the priciest per day, so it suits a single cat best.

What You Give Up for a Lighter Bag

Lightweight litter has three recurring trade-offs. First, it always costs more per pound, because you’re paying for volume rather than weight. Second, lighter grains travel further from the box when cats dig or jump out. Third, some light litters don’t clump at all.

None of these are deal-breakers. Compare cost per day rather than per pound, put a mat at the box exit, and choose a clumping option if you prefer to scoop. My guide to stopping litter tracking has more ways to contain light litter.

Lightweight Clay or Natural Litter?

If your cats are happy on clay, lightweight clay is the smallest change. Nothing about the box routine changes except the weight you carry. Cat’s Pride Lightweight is a cheaper option, at about 25% lighter than average clay, per the brand.

If you want less dust or a renewable material, a natural light litter is worth the extra cost. Switch gradually, mixing the new litter into the old over a week or two. My biodegradable cat litter guide compares more plant-based options.

My Verdict on Lightweight Cat Litter

Bottom line

For most homes, Tidy Cats LightWeight Free & Clean is the easiest lightweight litter: it scoops like clay at about half the weight, per the brand. If you want a natural option, World’s Best clumps well and is sold almost everywhere.

For the least dust, choose Tuft + Paw or Ökocat. Expect to pay more per day for any lighter litter, and check prices on the retailer’s page, since they change often.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best lightweight cat litter?

For most people, a lightweight clumping clay such as Tidy Cats LightWeight Free & Clean is the easiest switch, since it scoops like regular clay at about half the weight, per the brand. If you want a natural option, World’s Best and Catalyst both clump and weigh far less than clay.

Is lightweight litter as good as regular litter?

It can be close, but there are trade-offs. Light grains are more likely to travel out of the box, and lightweight litter usually costs more per pound. Some light litters, such as paper pellets and silica crystals, don’t clump at all.

How is lightweight cat litter made lighter?

Lightweight clay is made less dense than standard clay, while natural light litters use materials that are less dense to begin with, such as corn, wood, soy, paper or silica. They fill a box to the same depth as clay at a fraction of the weight.

Is lightweight cat litter more expensive?

Per pound, yes, every time. Per day, it depends. A lightweight bag contains less weight but fills the same box volume, so compare cost per day. Natural light litters ran about $0.52 to $0.97 per day for one cat in our tests, against about $0.39 to $0.43 for clay.

Does lightweight litter track more?

Often, yes. Lighter granules are easier for a cat to kick and carry out of the box. Pellet-shaped light litters, like tofu and paper, tend to track less than fine light granules. A mat at the box exit helps either way.
